JOB SUMMARY:
Clemson University's Environmental Engineering & Earth Sciences is looking for a Laboratory Technologist IV to fulfill the following duties:
- Directs, coordinates and implements the separate and integral activities of all Departmental research and instructional laboratories and their personnel to enable them to perform their respective functions.
- Directs the management and daily activities of the analytical instruments and facilities of the L. G. Rich Environmental Research Laboratory and selected facilities in the Clemson Environmental Technologies Lab (CETL) and in EEES facilities on the main campus, including Brackett Hall and the Biosystems Research Complex.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
JOB DUTIES:
50% - Essential - Laboratory and Machine Shop Operations and Personnel Management:
Manages the daily operations of a complex analytical laboratory. Plans and directs the activities of laboratory employees, including faculty, post-docs and student workers. Directs lab staff and works with students and faculty in the Department in the performance of their teaching and research. Manages technical and administrative problems. Manages the operations of the Machine shop. Recommends the instrumentation and equipment to faculty and students. Advises graduate research assistants in the fabrication of specialized instrumentation and equipment not available through commercial sources. Works with other outside laboratories.
20% - Essential - Building Security and Laboratory Safety Management:
Directs lab maintenance and security as well as general building and grounds maintenance and security at the L. G. Rich Environmental Laboratory. Inspects all Department laboratories and facilities to ensure that they are maintained in a clean, orderly, safe and secure manner. Schedules Department laboratory safety seminars and monitors the use of safety techniques, procedures and equipment by Department personnel. Serves as a liaison to Office of Research and Safety to investigate proposed chemical and biological analytical procedures that employ wet chemical techniques and instrumental analysis.
10% - Essential - Analysis and Instrument Management:
Operates and maintains complex analytical instruments and associated computer equipment. Plans, organizes, prepares and directs the functions of all instructional laboratories, including setup, calibration and operation instruction, and instruction for the performance of prescribed tests and analyses. Participates in complex physical and chemical analyses. Ensures routine maintenance is performed on department analytical instrumentation and equipment. Maintains communication with competent professional instrument technicians for complex instrument and equipment maintenance and repair. Monitors analytical and experimental testing and quality control.
10% - Essential - Procurement and Inventory Management:
Purchases, receives, stocks and dispenses inventory instrumentation, equipment, gas cylinders, chemicals and any other supplies necessary to the operation of the Department's stated function. Maintains a file of current catalogs, price lists and descriptive literature covering instrumentation, equipment and supplies applicable for general and specific use in the stated disciplines of the Department.
10% - Essential - Training and Advising:
Conducts lab orientations for all students as needed. Directs instruction of all Department personnel in the proper use, operation and care of analytical instruments. Directs faculty, staff and students in the production of audio and visual training aids to complement instruction in instrumental techniques. Provides consultation in the area of expertise to public and private individuals and other laboratory personnel. Conducts tours of all labs for prospective students, faculty and any other Departmental visitors interested in areas of research.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education - Bachelor's Degree in chemistry, microbiology, biochemistry or a closely related field.
Work Experience - Work experience as a chemist in a supervisory, teaching or consulting capacity.
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:
Education - Master's Degree - Analytical Chemistry
